Background of the Provincial Public Service Commission of Western Province

Public Service Commission of the Western Province has been established in year 1986.

In terms of the provisions of section IV of the Provincial Council Act No 42 of 1987 which is connected to the functions of the provincial council established as per 13th Amendment to the Constitution, the powers exercised by Hon Governor with regard to the appointment, transfers, dismissal from service, and disciplinary control of the officers in provincial public service have been vested in the Provincial Public Service Commission. In terms of the section 32(2) of the Provincial Council Act No 42 of 1987 amended by Provincial Council (Amendment) Act No 28 of 1990, a part of the powers underĀ  Provincial Public Service Commission of the Western Province has been vested in Chief Secretary, Head of Departments and Secretaries of the Ministries of Western Provincial Council.

An independent commission consists of members of not less than three has been appointed by the Governor of the Western Province as per Section 33(1) of the Provincial Council Act No 42 of 1987. At present Public Service Commission of the Western Province consists of seven members including Hon Chairman with the expansion of the functions of the Commission.
